I've been given "Erthromycin" by my dermatologist. what is it? and how it going to help with my Acne?

Erythromycin is an antibiotic of the macrolide class. Oral antibiotics have been used for some time for moderate to severe acne with good results. They work by killing a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes which is known to be involved in the development of acne. Other antibiotics are more commonly used, such as Tetracycline or Minocycline. The main problem with Erythromycin is it%26#039;s GI side effects (abdominal pain, diarrhea) and also the development of resistance.|||Erthromycin is an antibiotic and is generally used to treat bacterial infections.

Not all acne has bacterial infection but I believe your doctor suspects you do so be sure you take all your medication as directed.

Also, do not drink alcohol while on this medication and stay out of the sun.

Good Luck - hope your acne clears up soon.|||I%26#039;m no expert, but I would be very nervous if I were you. What you have is an antibiotic. It is a large spectrum antibiotic, which means it fights a bunch of different germs. The more antibiotics you take, the more your body develops an immunity to them. Antibiotics are a short term fix, that is; fighting infection. If you are only supposed to take it for a week or so, that will help fix the immediate problems of infections. But you need to talk to the doc about his long term plan to treat your acne. You can%26#039;t be on antibiotics long term. You may need antibiotics to fight something serious like pneumonia or bronchitis and you don%26#039;t want your body so used to antibiotics that they no longer work for you.
