How good are dermatologists?

I have really severe acne and I have tried nearly every possible acne medication. In a couple days I%26#039;ll be going to see a dermatologist and I want to know if he would be able to do anything other than recommend the same acne medication (such as Proactive, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Clean and Clear etc) that I have already been using.


Or if he would be able to give me something that may actually work for me.

The %26#039;medications%26#039; you describe are only the very mildest over-the-counter treatments. A dermatologist can prescribe all acne drugs, including:





- Topical retinoids such as Tretinoin, Adapalene, Tazarotene


- Oral antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Minocycline, Erythromycin


- Topical antibiotics such as Clindamycin, Erythromycin


- Hormonal treatment such as Dianette and other birth control pills


- Accutane


- Azelaic acid


- Sodium Sulfacetimide


- Metronidazole


- Nicotinamide


- Sulfones (Dapsone)





There is also Blue Light Treatment.





You have basically not tried anything yet! Do what your dermatologist says, to the letter, and you will see a big improvement in your acne.|||ya the one i went to wasnt much help. But if your a boy they can give you some strong medicine that will work. If your a girl they will only give it to you if your on birth control (it can cause birth defects) i forgot what its called. i think it started with an A. The first thing they might prescribe you is a pill along with a yucky medicine you put on your face. It didnt work for me :(|||well, i%26#039;ve been to the dermatologist for the same issue: acne. and yea they did help a lot. And what they told me is that if you use face wash every morning and night it helps. and they are so right! it clears up in no time. also, if you we%26#039;re to only use it once a day it doesn%26#039;t help as well but also if you do only use it once a day you are best off doing it before you go to bed.


By the way, they will probably give you some kind of other medication for it but most likely be a pill (those work great.) and just dont give up on it right away. because then you could be missing out on a clear face.
